ABSTRACT: In this article the theme of what is hidden from view in the sand tray is explored as a transitional space between that which is completely buried or unconscious and that which is completely visible and conscious. The author’s interest in this topic stems from her own process in which this theme was significant. Several sandplay processes in which this theme is central are presented. There is discussion of the different ways figures can be partially hidden from view within the sand tray and their possible meanings. The symbolism of the veil and masked figures, which are inherently hidden, is explored. Through analysis of the progression of what is hidden or revealed in consecutive sandplay scenes, it is demonstrated that, depending on the context, what is hidden can indicate: personal and secondary trauma, shadow, an attempt to protect emerging and vulnerable aspects of the Self, wounding, healing and a connection to the collective. By attending more fully to this transitional space sandplay therapists can gain awareness of themes that are ready to come to the surface; this in turn helps them trace and guide their clients’ progress in healing trauma.
