THE LITTLE MERMAID:
CULTURAL EXPECTATIONS OF THE FEMININE

Journal of Sandplay Therapy, Volume 26, Number 2, 2017

KEY WORDS: Sandplay therapy, narcissistic wounds, depression, trauma, sexual abuse, mermaid, symbol, “Little Mermaid,” women, girls, woman, female, ego strength, voice, cultural expectations, clinical examples.

ABSTRACT: In this article the author notes that mermaid figurines, including that of the Little Mermaid (Andersen, 1837 and Disney Studios animated film, 1989) have been very frequently used by female clients in her practice. Many of these clients often found it difficult to say “no” to others and to assert themselves. The author observes a relationship between clients’ narcissistic wounding and the image of the mermaid without a voice. Over time these clients tend to become better able to listen to their inner voices. In social and family situations they begin to speak up and express their needs. While discussing cultural expectations the author comments that the image of the mermaid is not specific to the Chinese feminine complex but can be seen as a more universal image of the movement towards an increasingly developed sense of self and voice. The author focuses on two female patients who were devalued as children. One of them had a history of abuse, trauma and had been hospitalized for depression. For her the image of the mermaid may have carried the forbidden expression of anger, sadness, shame, worthlessness and helplessness. Like the Little Mermaid in Disney’s film, the client worked to differentiate herself from the collective. Her hard work might indicate a movement towards healing of narcissistic wounds.
