ABSTRACT: This paper focuses on the symbol of ch’i-lin, its Chinese origin and relationship with western symbol mercurius, related folklore and its psychological implication in sandplay therapy. Described by Jung as the eastern unicorn, ch’i-lin has long been one of the sacred mythic animals in Chinese history. The image of the ch’i-lin is deeply rooted in the Chinese psyche. Two sandplay clinical case examples, a male adolescent and a female adult, are illustrated in which they both used the ch’i-lin miniature in their sandplay processes. The ch’i-lin’s symbolic meaning in both genders and its mercurial nature are discussed.

Das Bild des Ch’i-lin, ist tief in der chinesischen Psyche verwurzelt. Zwei Fallbeispiele werden präsentiert: ein männlicher Jugendlicher und eine erwachsene Frau. Die symbolische Bedeutung des Ch’i-lin für beide Geschlechter und seine wechselhafte Natur werden diskutiert.
