ABSTRACT: This paper explores the symbolism and nature of the wet and dry sand as well as the use of the two trays in one Sandplay therapy session. The author considers the meaning of water in the wet tray and its significance in Sandplay therapy. A clinical example of a 5 year old child is used to demonstrate processes of progression and regression as well as integration and deintegration as movements of psychic energy seen in the use of the two sandtrays. Use of one of the sandtrays as a threshold and holding repressed and unmet elements of this child’s psyche is shown and discussed. Furthermore, the article explores how connection and splitting can be expressed in two sandtrays.
