UMBRELLAS AND PARASOLS

Journal of Sandplay Therapy, Volume 14, Number 1, 2005

KEY WORDS: sandplay therapy, clinical example, symbol, low self-esteem, learning disability, child, female, umbrella, parasol, safety.

ABSTRACT: The author relates the umbrellas’ symbolic meanings, from literature citings to art references and representations in sandplay therapy; and includes a parallel between Christo’s umbrella project and the concept of the temenos, a sacred space a therapist creates for each sandplayer. This article presents the author’s experience and hypothesis that the umbrella or parasol can be a powerful symbol of the safety provided by a sandplay therapist.
