The Language of Symbols in Sandplay Therapy

The first course in a series of four intermediate trainings.
This course focuses on the use of figures as symbols when a client creates a sandplay scene and reveals unconscious material. A new language will be introduced describing the energies involved in this creation process. Beginning with a discussion of creating and holding “the free and protected space” as described by Dora Kalff, participants will the language of symbols and archetypes through interactive hands-on experience explanations and case presentations. The case presentation includes elements of sandplay therapy and play therapy. Symbolic communication in the co-transference will be demonstrated using figures and case examples. The closing discussion offers guidance about how to select figures reflecting diversity of gender, culture, ethnicity, religion, history, fantasy and mythology to create an integrated collection.
 
            Understand the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of selecting a figure from a Sandplay collection and its symbolic significance.
             Identify the language used to link the client, the figure, and the therapist in the creation of the sand scene.
             Describe the levels of consciousness and unconsciousness to recognize Jung’s difference between a symbol and a sign.
             Recognize the clinical importance of creating a diverse figure collection.

BIO: David Capitolo, MA, LMFT, CST-T, is a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist. He is a Certified Sandplay Therapist and teaching member of the Sandplay Therapists of America and International Society for Sandplay Therapy. He is a founding member and Treasurer of the Northern California Regional Sandplay Society. He and his wife founded the Child Therapy Institute of Marin, a non-profit providing Sandplay based therapy .He has taught nationally and has published several articles in the Journal of Sandplay Therapy including Sandplay as Waking Dream – Images Hidden in the Emotions and On Both Sides Being Strong – Masculine and Feminine Principles
He has clinical practices in San Rafael and San Francisco, California where he works with children, adolescents, and adults.
