Presentation of theory and case material

Olga will present theoretical material related to the Hero’s Journey based on Neumann’s perspective on the developmental stages and the “devouring” quality of the past developmental stages. We’ll explore his diagram of the developmental stages. Further we’ll explore symbols expressing their “devouring” quality, one of which is a dragon, accompanied by their representations in art. The heroic fight with a dragon will be placed in the context of the Hero’s Journey. Then Olga will present case material from a man with immigrant background. Representations of fairy tales which he created in his sandplay process reflected his personal mythology and battles he had to fight.

Objectives

Define Neumann’s perspective on the developmental stages
Define the “devouring” quality of the past developmental stages and their possible symbolic representations
Discuss the cyclical stages of the archetypal hero’s journey
Explore case material and the contents of the fairy tales represented by the client through sandplay

Olga’s article accompanying her presentation is found in the recent Journal of Sandplay Therapy Vol. 25, Number 2, 2016 (it has an orange cover): Healing spirit, body and mind disjoined by immigration through Sandplay Therapy (p. 103-127).
