ABSTRACT: The Gateway: Boundary, Entrance and Threshold explores the symbol of the threshold and its significance, drawing on historical, mythological, religious and neurological sources. The author argues that the threshold, mirrors the transcendent function itself, bringing together the opposites and providing a third space where something new can emerge. The gateway symbol is discussed in its many aspects as it presented in the sandplay work of a 9-year-old girl who was approaching puberty and dealing with the many losses created by her parents’ separation and divorce.
