ABSTRACT: Adolescence is an important developmental phase during which the youngster strives to break away from parental identification and develop a new identity. This transition can be painful, and it can be seen as a time of death and rebirth. In this article, the author draws a parallel between initiation rituals as observed in primitive societies and the sandplay therapy process. The clinical case material illustrates archetypal patterns of initiation at work in a 12-year-old adolescent boy. In his therapy this boy went through the threefold movement of initiation: separating from the world of childhood, confrontation with death, and emergence of a new identity in the masculine realm.
