SUN AND MOON

Journal of Sandplay Therapy, Volume 1, Number 2, 1991

KEY WORDS: sun, moon, women, men, differentiation, sandplay scenes, sandplay therapy, symbol.

ABSTRACT: Observations of trays after adding a sun and moon to the collection:

  • More women than men used both sun and moon in their trays.
  • When both sun and moon were used by women, they were always in some relationship to each other, together or on opposites sides of the tray (providing experiences of tension between, and bringing together, of opposites?)
  • When using the sun, most women included images of new life: eggs or babies (related to the fact that the sun is ultimately the source of all life?) Accumulation of experiences about sandplay can add to our understanding of the human psyche.
