The Sandplay Therapists of America (STA) is a non-profit professional organization, whose purpose is to promote education, training and research in sandplay therapy.

The STA is an affiliate of the parent organization, The International Society for Sandplay Therapy (ISST), which provides an international meeting ground for the exchange of knowledge and experience in sandplay.

Join us for a retreat into nature at the beautiful Mt. Madonna center where we will settle in and experience together the power and mystery of the natural world. We will tend and listen to the 'spirit of the depths' as we work with the living symbol. Using meditation, dreamwork, movement, writing and art along with a combination of didactic and clinical presentations and case consultation, we will deepen our understanding and experience of sandplay as the powerful work of the soul. This five day retreat is for intermediate and advanced sandplay therapists who are in or have completed a personal process.

Opening of the Sandplay Therapy Institute

The Sandplay Therapists of America is pleased to announce the opening of the Sandplay Therapy Institute in the Fall of 2009. The purpose of this Institute is to promote the study of sandplay as taught by Dora Kalff.

The goal is to provide a learning environment for in-depth study of sandplay, and an exploration into the intricate workings of the human psyche, with affordability as a key priority. Click here for more information (.pdf).

Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay therapy is a psychotherapeutic tool used with children and adults. The method consists of the client’s creation of a three-dimensional picture with miniature figures in a tray of sand in the protective presence of a trained practitioner.

Sandplay as taught and practiced by the STA was developed by the late Jungian therapist, Dora M. Kalff, of Switzerland for use with children in Jungian therapy.

Sandplay® Now a US Registered Trademark

Sandplay®, the term describing the unique therapeutic method named by its founder, Dora Kalff, is now protected as a federally registered trademark of the Sandplay® Therapists of America™ (STA). The trademark was registered by the US Patent and Trademark Office in June 2012 (registration number 4,152,106).

Federal registration of the sandplay® mark grants STA the exclusive right to use the mark in connection with instruction in sandplay® therapy, as well as the assessment and distribution of related training materials and the publication of related scholarly works. The mark is used to distinguish Kalffian sandplay® therapy from other forms of therapy using sand.

To avoid trademark infringement, therapists not recognized by STA should refer to their work as “sand tray” therapy, and to themselves as “sand tray” therapists.
