ABSTRACT: This symbol of strength and perseverance is seen in the process of a boy’s journey of heroism. The Superman myth holds the essence of the hero’s journey of departure, initiation and transfiguration, as described by Joseph Campbell. The letting down of the identity of one’s disguise, such as Clark Kent in the Superman myth, reminds the reader of the journey to individuation. The case described is that on a 12 year old boy who discovers the hero archetype within himself to understand his adoption and reception into a new family, much like Superman’s story. After twelve months of therapy, he is ready to handle what new horizons his life held for him.
