Morena, Gita. An Integration Process: Sandplay Therapy at the End of Life

Volume 18, Number 2, 2009

Keywords: end of life, cancer, alchemy, archetype, unconscious, integration, death, integration, symbolic imagery, sandplay, sandplay process.

Abstract: In this case study, Gita Morena explores how the sand scenes of an aging woman reveal current life struggles and provide a vehicle for addressing end of life issues. In addition, it is possible to see how information from the depths of the unconscious manifests in the sand, and how the resolution of internal conflicts may transform into a sense of wholeness and inner peace. Through an exploration of symbolic imagery and an understanding of sandplay process, it is possible to see indications in the trays of an unexpected health crisis long before it is diagnosed medically. The sand scenes are viewed from an alchemical and archetypal perspective to show an integration of mind body and spirit that seems to occur in this woman’s sand scenes as she unconsciously prepares for death.
