In Memoriam

Volume 17, Number 2

Professor Doctor Hayao Kawai, 1928-2007
Kazuhiko Higuchi
Kyoto, Japan

Summary: Dr. Higuchi expresses his sadness on the death of a great teacher, Professor Dr. Kawai. He describes some of Dr. Kawai’s many accomplishments as Japan’s first Jungian analyst and founder of analytic psychology in Japan. When he first took these ideas back to Japan he began by introducing sandplay because he thought it would be more familiar for the Japanese psyche, as it related to other aspects of Japanese culture.
