Pattis, Eva. Digging in the Air: Inflation, Fantasy and Sandplay Therapy

Volume XV, Number 2

Keywords: inflation, lunar consciousness, solar consciousness, preverbal, presymbolic, synthetic thinking, analytic thinking.
Abstract: The author notes that over the years there has developed excessive enthusiasm in the training of sandplay therapists which has generated overinflated expectations and simplification of both the clinical base and of Jung’s and Neumann’s terms and concepts. The author recalls the image of Icarus. Three fantasies are discussed: learning sandplay is easy, sandplay can be applied to different cultures, sandplay leads to transcendental experience. This article is a recent sequel to “What can a Jungian Analyst Learn from Sandplay?” (Journal of Sandplay Therapy, volume 11, number 1, 2002).
