Driscoll, Regina. Sandplay as a Liminal Art: A Reflection on “The Worlds Where Worlds Meet”

Volume 12, Number 1, 2003 (Volume XII, Number 1, 2003)

KEY WORDS: sandplay therapy, limen, threshold, STA, national, Conference, presentations.

ABSTRACT: This article recaps some of the major presentations of the sixth National Sandplay Conference, entitled “The Worlds Where Worlds Meet,” held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in October, 2002. The article also discusses some aspects of the liminal space, or the border between two disparate realms such as mind and body, or consciousness and unconsciousness. The liminal space has been described as the place where change takes place, where one thing is transformed into another. Additional points of discussion include the power and danger in sandplay when it bridges these disparate realms, and a recommendation that future conferences create “liminal spaces” between presentations where the participants can integrate and be transformed by new ideas and insights.
