Kawai, Hayao. The Sun and the Moon in Japanese Mythology Volume I, Number 2, 1992 Dr. Kawai presents the differences in the symbology of the Sun and the Moon in Western and Eastern cultures. In his notes he compares these differences with those of Frau Kalff in the article in this edition on the fox and the hare from the two cultures. There has been general acceptance of the “Sun-Male-Conscious-Masculine” and “Moon-Female-Unconscious-Earth” comparisons. But, Dr. Kawai provides description of how much more complicated the discrimination is. In Japan, the moon is more appreciated than the sun. The appreciation is for the darkness, as well as the light. In China, the moon is male and the sun is female. He concludes that the problem of understanding is never simple! SYMBOLS-SUN AND MOON |
